AI hands: how to spot fake fingers, knuckles and grips

Hands are still the most common giveaway. Count fingers, then look at how they hold things.

Image models learn from millions of photos where hands are small, blurred or partly hidden. They know roughly what a hand looks like, but not how it is built. That is why errors cluster around joints, nails and the places where a hand touches something.

Newer models rarely draw six fingers anymore. The mistakes moved to subtler places: a thumb that bends the wrong way, a ring that melts into skin, two hands that share a finger, or a grip where the fingers pass through the cup instead of around it.

Real hands are also messy. They have uneven nails, creases, veins and tan lines that stop at a watch strap. AI hands tend to be smooth and evenly lit, as if every hand in the picture had the same manicure.

False alarms

Motion blur, wide-angle lenses and odd poses make real hands look strange too. One weird hand is a hint, not proof.
